3 Matcha Café Favorites to Make at Home

The ice clinks. A ribbon of green slips through cold milk. You give the glass a stir and take the first sip.
A favorite café drink can become something you look forward to making in your own kitchen. With a little matcha, a few familiar ingredients, and a recipe that suits your taste, there is plenty to explore.
Here are three ways to begin with 100% Yame-grown matcha from Fukuoka, Japan: a classic iced latte, a strawberry latte, and a warm matcha pour over vanilla ice cream.
1. The everyday favorite: iced matcha latte
Cool milk, plenty of ice, and the flavor of tea running through every sip. Start here if you want a simple drink you can make again tomorrow, then adjust the sweetness and strength until it feels like yours.

For one glass
- 2g matcha
- 60ml warm water, around 75°C / 167°F
- 150ml cold milk or oat milk
- Ice, plus sweetener if you like
- Sift the matcha into a bowl, add the warm water, and whisk until smooth.
- Fill a glass with ice and pour in the cold milk.
- Add the whisked matcha, stir, and taste before adding sweetener.
For a stronger cup, try 3g of matcha with the same amount of milk.
Our matcha choice: Fuji, made from second-harvest Yame tea, is our starting point for everyday lattes. Kiku, made from third-harvest Yame tea, is another option we recommend for milk-based drinks.
2. Something fruity: strawberry matcha latte
Crushed strawberries at the bottom, cold milk in the middle, and matcha poured over the top. Take a moment to enjoy the layers, then stir them together so the fruit, milk, and tea meet in every mouthful.
For one glass
- 2–3g matcha
- 50ml warm water, around 75°C / 167°F
- 120ml cold milk or oat milk
- 3 tablespoons mashed ripe strawberries
- Ice; 1 teaspoon sugar or syrup, optional
- Mash the strawberries, adding a little sugar or syrup if needed, and spoon them into a glass.
- Sift the matcha and whisk it with the warm water.
- Add ice and milk to the strawberries, then pour the matcha over the top. Stir before drinking.
Taste your strawberries first. Very ripe berries may need little added sweetness.
Our matcha choice: try Fuji or Kiku. If you are comparing them, keep the milk, fruit, and sweetness the same so you can notice what each tea brings to the finished drink.
3. The after-dinner treat: matcha affogato
A scoop of vanilla ice cream. A small bowl of warm, concentrated matcha. Pour slowly and watch the green run into the melting edges. Serve straight away and enjoy the contrast of warm tea and cold vanilla.

For one serving
- 2g matcha
- 30–40ml warm water, around 75°C / 167°F
- 1–2 scoops vanilla ice cream or a plant-based alternative
- Sift the matcha and whisk it with the warm water into a smooth, concentrated pour.
- Scoop the ice cream into a small bowl or glass.
- Pour the matcha over it and serve immediately.
